As you go about your planning for Social Studies the next couple of weeks you will see that the plans reference a Mock Election for our students to take part in. You are probably thinking, Oh gosh! What will we do? How are we going to pull that off?
The mock elelction is slated for October 31. Students will be voting in the library. Mr. Rideout is creating a Google survey for students to use to cast their votes. The surveys will all accumualate into a central database and declare a district winner. iWill have voter registration cards for students to fill out & bring with them when they come to vote & iWill have them sign in just like an actual polling place. iWill have a schedule for the time to bring your classes down to vote on the 31st.
Each grade level might want to come up with some decorations, charts, ads, etc.; student created of course, that provide information about the candidates and the issues. This would be a great way to pull in some technology. Comic Life or Pages would be great options for student products. Take a look at your TEKS and see what you need to cover. I have a few resources that may help you out. I am linking several websites that you could use in your lessons or as resources. I have also pulled a few images that you can use also.
The Election Activity Book -This workbook from Scholastic has activities for grades 1-3 that focus on voting, campaigns & Presidents
Smithsonian in the Classroom A great set of lessons with great resources included!!! You could take partd to use in tyour classroom.
Britianica Image Search This is a safe image search for students. You can do a keyword search for for any topic. These photos have been licensed for student work & presentations. Each has the citation that you can coy & paste.
NBC LEARN- This site is on the library's more resources page. It is video from the NBC archives from the start of TV news to current events. You can find all kinds of great videos on election topics or the candidates.
Power Videos -On the Library's More Resources page. I sent you a link to create an account earlier this week.
Scholastic.com- There are printables, book lists, online articles, etc. There are articles that were printed in their classroom magazines. They have a good advanced search menu.
CNN Student News- The is a box in the middle of the page for election news. I really like the jargon busters for election vocabulary.
Library Resources- I will be pulling books & videos related to voting, elections & the presidency. I will place these items on a cart to reserve them for teachers.
I hope that these resources can help you build dynamic lessons with your students. I am ready & willing to help you with lessons on any topic with your students whenever possible.
Keep in mind I do not have to be in the library for you to check out books. If I am out teaching a lesson go ahead & come in and check out books. If you want a story we can schedule a second time for you to come again.
