And the Winner is...

Tonight is the Academy Awards & I have to say that I am inspired to pop some popcorn & watch a few movies over Spring Break.  I enjoy the beauty & glamor of it all. I really have the urge to go back & watch John Hughes' great films from the 1980s. Oh! how I dreamed of being Molly Ringwald. I wanted to wear cool funky clothes,  have beautiful red hair & I wanted the High School hunk to fall deeply & madly in love with me. Oh well real life entered in.

As a  I watch Hollywood extol their talent & creative greatness, I pause & think of what they do & what we do as educators each & every day. We do not get SWAG very often & if we do, it comes on a MUCH smaller budget. No one gives us gorgeous gowns to wear, but we do get to buy a school t-shirt so we can wear jeans every once & a while (& we all are very grateful to do so). They have stunt doubles for their action sequences, what can I say, our daredevils could challenge & out manuever the best of Hollywood's stunt men. They write & read scripts that will be remembered for years to come. Hopefully, on day we will be fondly remembered. Instead, we teach people to read, to write, to calculate, to think scientifically, the list of our jobs is endless and there is not a personal assistant to give us a helping hand. They wouldn't last long at what we do. Of Hollywood & movies I am a fan, but seriously... all the fanfare & celebration. What's the big deal? They make a movie. Try teaching someone how to blend their sounds & hear what comes at the end of a word or how to count elasped time, or how to express your thoughts & ideas on paper, to develop a love for reading & learning. Trying to develop respect & self-discipline in someone when you are the only one holding them to a a higher standard.

What I would like to say to you is AND THE WINNER IS....YOU. You do what really matters with out the fanfare & whoop-ti-do that Hollywood gives itself. Keep up the excellent work. Our students are growing & learning, being shaped for their future. I wish I had a statue & big bag of SWAG for you. All I can offer is my respect & appreciation for what you do each & everyday. You leave me speechless, because I am truly in awe of the greatness I experience every day. Thank you.
